2.8 Onboard Serial Interface

The EVM320C54XX has a TL16C550 UART (U8) which provides a an additional serial

interface. This UART is mapped into I/O space at locations 0x0000 to 0x0008. This

device allows users to use this resource for data logging, code debugging and other

applications. The software wait state generator should be set to 3-7 wait states before

accessing the UART. The UART interface GAL, U22, generates the necessary wait

states to complete the interface cycle.

This UART is brought out to connector P5 on the EVM320C54XX. Connector P5 is a

DB9 female connector. The pin positions for the P5 connector as viewed from the edge

of the EVM320C54XX.

The pin numbers and their corresponding signals are shown in the table below:

* Jumper JP2 can be used to configure pin 4 to pin 7

on P5. This allows for normal handshaking. The jumper

settings are shown in the table below:
